Artist statement
My paintings play at narrative, but their real subject is the painted ground, and the space that shifts across it.
My paintings are not mimetic. I'm not interested in following the rules of perspective, or in making a painting look exactly like what I see. Whether I'm painting a room or building an abstraction, the work plays at narrative, but its real subject is the painted ground itself: how a surface is constructed, layer by layer, out of line, pattern and color.
I'm interested in the space a viewer perceives on that flat surface, and in letting it shift. A room can tilt into pattern, and a pattern can open into a room. That tension between pictured space and the abstract qualities of paint is where each painting lives.

About
Cherese Rosales is a New York painter working in acrylic on canvas and paper. She trained as a painter at Cornell University and later earned a master's in art history from Binghamton University. Her work moves between richly patterned interiors of historic rooms and layered geometric abstractions built from line, pattern and soft fields of color. Alongside her studio practice she spent eight years directing the Vestal Museum, where she curated more than 50 exhibitions. She has also exhibited as Cherese Wiesner-Rosales.
